Everything You Wanted To Know About This Site
(But Were Afraid To Ask)
Some of the content has disappeared. What happened to it?
We've run out of room that has been allocated to us for this site, so in order to put up anything new, we have to take down something old. WAIT!!! NEWSFLASH....Thanks to a very generous contribution from Dr. Zoet, we've upgraded the site and we've got lots more room. We probably won't restore the old stuff we took down, but watch for plenty of new additions in the coming months!
Why was the site moved from www.jimmyvivino.8k.com?
Several reasons: The person who voluntarily maintained the site (and owned the URL) lives in Europe. Due to circumstances we're not really sure about, she is no longer able to participate in the development and maintenance of the site. We could not get control of the URL, so there was no way for us to keep the site updated. Therefore, we decided to re-create the site at a different location.
Are there other advantages to this location?
Yes. The old URL was not a real domain..it was a subdomain: thus the "8k". Our new URL, jimmyvivino.com, is much more intuitive and easy to remember. Also, the old site was full of annoying advertising and popups. This new site has no advertising and no popups.
Who creates the content for the site?
All of the content as well as the site design and maintenance is developed and performed by volunteers. We're not sure who they all are, but they're reputed to be members of the Sons & Daughters of Paramus, a legendary, but loosely organized group.
Does anyone make any money from this site?
Absolutely not. No one is paid for his or her time or energy. The cost for the URL was donated.
Does Jimmy Vivino contribute to the site?
Jimmy responded to questions that were posed to him here. If you have other questions for Jimmy, send them to us at the email address listed below. We send them to a guy who sends them to a gal who sends them to a guy who gets them to Jimmy. And then Jimmy sends them back to us through the same top-secret procedure. Generally, while Jimmy appreciates our efforts, Jimmy is a self-confessed computerphobe and doesn't really understand much about the internet. He's too busy trying to create and perform great music and keep the blues tradition alive. And given a choice between Jimmy writing HTML code and performing great music, well...you know. Although...Jimmy got a new computer this year and is much more interested in what we're doing and often participates on the Postings Board. So if you have a question...post it!
I've searched for this site on Google and Yahoo, but I only get a listing for the old site. How come?
The old site has finally been taken down, so that shouldn't happen once the seach engines update their contents.
I've looked at this site on several different browsers and it seems to look a bit different on each. How come?
Different browsers handle the XHTML coding in different ways. Some browsers don't support all known functionality. Meanwhile, we suggest you use the latest version of any given browser. We also recommend NOT using the AOL browser. Instead, log on to AOL, but then open an external browser. As far as IE, Netscape and Safari are concerned, they each have advantages and disadvantages and they each handle our site slightly differently.
Some site pages take a really long time to load.
The Daughters are very into having the site contain lots of design and graphics. Unfortunately, that makes the site slow, ESPECIALLY on dialup connections. The site works pretty well on cable-modem and DSL connections and eventually, we expect almost everyone will have such high speed service. But each page will only take a long time the first time you load it. After that, the images will be stored in your cache and will load as if they were located on your hard disk, not via the Internet. But if you delete your cache, then they have to load over again and it will be slower.
Sometimes I see an indication that a page has been updated, but when I click the link to go to that page, it seems out-of-date. How come?
Some browsers don't deal with updated pages well and instead read the stored page from the cache. If you go to a page that you think should be updated and it doesn't look like it is, click the REFRESH button in your browser. The new Apple Safari browser, while great in some respects, is particularly bad in this regard. If there is only a minor change to a page, you might have to delete the cache. To do this in IE, go to Preferences->Advanced and click on Empty Now and OK.
How long will this site exist?
It will exist as long as there is interest. Therefore, it's very important that everyone visit often, post on the message board and continue to contribute photos, reviews of shows and reviews of recorded material. That is our only indication that there is a desire to keep this site alive.
As you might imagine, it takes a tremendous amount of work to create and update this site. Most artists' sites are 4 to 10 pages. As of last count, this site composed of over 75 primary pages and over 500 images. We will only continue to expend energy on the site if we see continued interest.
I'm interested in having you build a site. Is that possible?
Certainly, please send an email to the site administrator and we'll get back to you.
How can we contact you?
