Review: The Self-Righteous Brothers
(L-R) Guest performer Frank Agnello, Mike Merrit, Al Kooper, Jimmy Vivino, guest performer Rich Pagano & Anton Fig.
The Self-Righteous Brothers performed at the Bottom Line in NYC on September 7, 2002.
Notes from Quabidt:
I loved the show. Mark Lindsay was great. It was a real treat to see him live for the first time. I recognized his face in the crowd and realized immediately who the special guest was. He looks pretty good and was gracious to the audience members who spoke with him.
Of course there were some classic moments, including the senior ones during Satisfaction and then managing to wrap himself up in the microphone cord to the point that he could barely get himself untangled. But the guy had so much positive energy and seemed to be having a nice time. Can't wait for the best 3,500 Lindsay & Kooper hits from the 40's through the 00's.
I like the self-righteous concept; mixing lesser chestnuts from the 50s & 60s with major hits and a bluesy bent. It's a challenge to keep it from turning into a nostalgia cover singalong, but Doctor Kooper injects enough rock history and pure love of great music to turn the experience into something fun and interesting, too.
Wake Me, Shake Me went into a nice extended jam that got pretty creative. Nice to hear some mandolin. Whiter Shade of Pale was wonderful, even though Jimmy quit smoking. Al's organ was strong and distinct.
I'm a sucker for Elvis's Wanna Play House Witchoo. Always nice to hear some Spencer Davis Group performed live.
Notes from Dr. Zoet:
I managed to get there for the last hour of the show. From what I saw, the show was fantastic and I bet the first part of the show was even better. The house was really packed!! I think it's really great that so many people turned out for this show.
The special guest was Mark Lindsay and when I walked in, he was singing Satisfaction (to which he forgot the words.)
As usual, Jimmy played and sang great. If you pay attention to Jimmy's technical virtuosity and risk-taking, it's really quite amazing to watch (and hear.) Jimmy also played a lot of keyboard last night and that also provided some nice piano work against Al's B3.
And joining the Self-Righteous Brothers were two members of the Fab Faux, Frank Agnello and Rich Pagano, whose backup vocals, especially on One, sounded really terrific.
In addition to Satisfaction, I heard Brenton Woods' Gimmie Some Kind of Sign, Harry Nillson's One, a weird mix of Cast Your Fate To The Wind and Under the Boardwalk, a bunch of blues numbers from the Rekoops Do What Now CD such as Sugaree, some Bobby Bland, Al doing Jerry Lewis doing Paul Simon, a closing of Wake Me, Shake Me and an encore of Gimmie Some Lovin
